Based at McClellan Airfield (MCC) in Sacramento, CA., and operated by Helimax Aviation Inc., N947CH is a versatile aircraft whose primary role is heavy-lift construction, but can be quickly configured and deployed to a variety of missions including search and rescue, medevac, disaster assistance, and firefighting.
Twin turboshaft engines and tandem rotors enable a top speed of 196 mph and a service ceiling of 18,000 feet. In the heavy-lift role, the CH-47 can
accommodate internal and external loads. In the single hook configuration, the fore or aft hooks can support loads of up to 17,000 pounds while the center hook supports a maximum load of 26,000 pounds. The flight crew consists of a pilot and co-pilot, and a flight engineer who maintains the aircraft, operates the systems in the rear cabin, and assists the pilots when landing or performing bucket operations. Each mission is also supported by ground crews with fuel and utility vehicles.
Although firefighting is not its stated primary role, N947CH is arguably better known to the public at large for its work on some of the largest fires in the western United States and Australia. Configured with SEI’s 2,000 gallon Bambi Bucket coupled with a PowerFill snorkel, the crew can access water sources as shallow as 18 inches deep at a rate of 450 gallons per minute. Fully loaded, the bucket carries more than 8 tons of water, and delivery can be split and controlled from the cockpit for multiple passes over a single target.
