Global SuperTanker 944 is a 747-446 operated by Global SuperTanker Services, LLC and based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Although primarily known for its role in wildfire suppression, its stated missions include response to marine fires and oil spills, remote rail or highway fires and chemical spills, and large scale area reseeding of forested areas devastated by wildfires. Tanker 944 contains 14 first class seats and two bunks for support personnel and flight crew.
The drop system is configured with two separate but identical constant flow pressure systems with a total capacity of 19,600 lbs of suppression agents including water, retardant, gel, foam, or combinations of two agents. The patented system allows for continuous discharge or up to eight segmented drops.
With a top speed of 521 kts (600 mph) and loaded to capacity, the crew can reach any point in the continental United States in 2.5 hours, North American destinations outside the United States in 4.5 hours, and global destinations in 20 hours including fuel stops if required. Even loaded to capacity, Tanker 944 operates 200,000 lbs below maximum gross weight and can immediately land without dumping fuel or suppression agents if a mission is cancelled.
With successful missions in Israel and Chile in 2017, Tanker 944’s first deployment in the United States was initiated by CAL FIRE to fight the 4,000 acre Ponderosa Fire in Butte County, Northern California. (Illustration by Eric Lian)
