N407CC is a Bell 407 operated by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit and based at Buchannan Field (CCR) in Concord, California. The Air Support Unit provides critical assistance to patrol personnel during a variety of calls for service to include pursuits of fleeing suspects, searches for criminal suspects, search and rescue missions, transport and deployment of tactical teams, crime scene photography, and aerial surveillance and reconnaissance. STARR (Sheriff’s Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance and Rescue) helicopters also conduct daily security patrols over the critical infrastructure and key resources within the county. Additionally, the Air Support Unit helicopter crews are trained to perform wildland fire suppression, the insertion of rescue personnel into remote or difficult to access areas, and medical transport to nearby emergency medical personnel.
Powered by a Rolls Royce 250 series turboshaft engine producing a maximum of 862 shaft horsepower, the 407 has a top speed of 161 mph, a range of 387 miles, and a loiter time of 4 hours. The aircraft is equipped with an FLIR Star SAFIRE 380 HDC dual sensor, Spectrolab NightSun XP spotlight, Churchill Navigation GPS moving map system, Vislink digital video downlink system, 144 gallon Bambi Bucket for fire suppression, and night vision goggles for operations at night.
